Godrej is a huge Conglomerate. It is household name in India.
Godrej happened thanks to my short stint at Trojan. Responded to an ad in the paper (this was the pre-job portal days!) and landed in the job. By far - I was the best candidate - I was told they found it difficult to find a suitable competition as an alternate second candidate for the final round. They however shortchanged me in compensation, they refused to show me my package until I joined and was few weeks old in the system. Bizarre.
I quickly realized that- Travel was a way, people out there made tons of money. I was responsible for Karnataka and had to travel to all god-forbidden places like Raichur, Gulburga, Dharwar, Hulbi etc etc. Travel was to be self arranged and in any means, claims were always for 2nd AC. That was the catch. There was the money.
The job was great fun, I was the first employee in the ESP division (Electronic Security Products) for K'taka. I got to innovate lots of things there - like the portable demo machines - clubbing Sales skills in Service engineers, doing ads in the Crime file section of TOI - city section and lots of other smaller things. End of the day - I was very satisfied with the job and the company. The only itch was that I was not in IT. Being a Computer Science Engineer and not being in IT in Bangalore was unacceptable to me.
My Parents were very happy with my job and my marriage became a hot topic of discussion and I eventually got married in Jan 99 - I was 25 years and 5.5 months old. Very early in today's standard but those days with my Nana around and with my cousins as benchmark - It was right time.
My Boss - Purshu was a good man. He was some 17 years in Godrej then, guess what he is still around in Godrej. He had just got promoted to AM post and transferred to Bangalore. He was least interfering. There was loads of freedom, no questions. Business was good those days and pressure was almost nil.
Retro Look: Good place but poor paymasters. Loads of freedom and was the best place to begin my career with.

Hi... may i know ur name & which year u were in Security division if Godrej Bangalore Branch...i was with furniture division at bangalore br between 2001 & 2004 reporting to Neel.
ReplyDeleteA lot has changed since then at Godrej. The travel is now paid on actuals but the salaries have increased manifold.Also growth opportunities increased as the company grew exponentially with the economy.
Am currently serving my 8th year in the company based at HO Bombay.Though i didnt start my career with Godrej i would say that it is a good place still with people like Purshu still around...
