Del .(Dot) - "Delete All" in DOS

Deldot was a SI, mainly into PC assembling and reselling. The other areas were Networking and Storage. Bangalore Based.

Desperate to be in IT - I started applying for jobs left right and center soon after I got married. Many interviews later - Deldot happened. Lots of opportunities did not happen for either location was an issue or lack of IT experience.
I was surprised with the name - Del .(dot) means delete all from the hard disk. This is a DOS command. How a company can have such a stupid name?

I was using a common Bangalore branch email while in Godrej. First thing I did at Deldot was to get myself an email id. Hotmail was the hep those days. I tried many user-names but most of them were taken, I hated ids having numbers with year of birth or current year. My creative side woke up and I came up with -"ootyajay", I went on to realize that this name is very unique and least sought after. So I get this user-name almost every where. Ooty is my hometown and a cool place - so my id roughly means cool Ajay.

Deldot training overran my first wedding anniversary and I had to celebrate it the next day. Shobana and I were not disappointed. Soon after the training I was thrown in the field. Kiran and I were freshers and soon became friends. Naresh was a veteran in Deldot and gradually he too become very friendly. We had to log some 5 calls a day - so we would scout the city looking for opportunities. I was very hard working and took that cold calling effort very seriously. I won some very handsome orders like Savantech.com, Hughes software, AT&T.

All was not well with Deldot - true to their name the Management was hell bent of wiping out the wealth of their investors. The chandra brothers were very greedy and IPO was their only intention - they were not keen on real business. They failed badly. Salaries started getting delayed and then dried up. The motivation to work gradually receded and 'quality work' started replacing 'quantity work', some orders did happen, but things were not bright. This was the time when we would fudge the 5 calls report. It was fun.

My boss - Subash was a biased man- always controlled by his brother. Subash to my mind had a style but less of substance. I would get intimidated by him. I did not enjoy working with him. Years later we were in the same company again (SUN) but did not get to work with him. From a distance I see that he is a changed man now and is far better than those days. Good for him.

After a short stint - I quit. Thanks to Naresh - I got to continue my employment with Wave Guide - a Deldot supplier.

Retro Look: Kick Start in IT but chor fellows in Management. High pressure sales job with little or no backing. No leadership.
